CHICAGO, IL -- One person was seriously injured Tuesday evening due to a fiery crash on the Dan Ryan Expressway in Chicago's Armour Square area, according to CBS Chicago News.
Illinois State Police said the accident occurred in the southbound lanes of the expressway, just south of the Stevenson Expressway junction, at around 8:40 p.m.
A preliminary investigation shows a white Jeep was heading south at a high rate of speed when it failed to slow for traffic. The Jeep then collided with the back of a semi-truck, causing both vehicles to catch fire and eventually become engulfed in flames.
Authorities said the truck driver, who was not hurt, was able to pull one person from the car.
The extricated victim was transported a local hospital in critical condition.
Major delays were reported on the expressway during the emergency response and initial investigation. By 10:14 a.m., all lanes were reopened to traffic.
