LAKE COUNTY, IL -- An 84-year-old woman was fatally injured Saturday morning when her vehicle collided with a semi-truck in Volo, reports WGN9.
Local police said the accident occurred on a span of U.S. Highway 12, as the victim's Chevrolet was exiting a parking lot on the east side.
Preliminary details indicate the Chevrolet was heading west toward the southbound lanes of US-12 at the same time a semi-truck approached northbound.
Authorities said the woman made a sudden U-turn, prompting the driver of the semi-truck to veer into the grassy median to avoid a crash, but the Chevrolet collided with the back side of the semi at high impact.
The 84-year-old woman, who suffered significant injuries, was rushed to an area hospital where she was pronounced deceased shortly after.
The driver of the semi, who was not reported hurt, remained at the scene after the wreck and cooperated with investigators. No charges have been reported.
No further information has been provided, but an autopsy has been scheduled to determine the decedent's official cause of death.
