LAKE COUNTY, IL -- An 87-year-old woman died Wednesday afternoon after a single-vehicle accident off a roadway in Lake Barrington, according to FOX 32 Chicago.
The fatal incident occurred in the 100 block of Waterview Court at about 12:45 p.m.
A preliminary investigation by the Lake County Sheriff's Office indicates the woman was operating a Nissan Altima when, for reasons still unclear, she accelerated off the roadway. Moments later, the car entered a yard where it collided with a garbage can, a small tree, and then a large tree before coming to rest.
The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene, confirmed officials.
No other occupants and no other vehicles appear to have been involved.
The LCSO's Technical Crash Investigations Unit is working to determine whether the victim may have mistaken her gas pedal for the brake. An autopsy is expected to be conducted in the coming days.
